Douglas Gymnasts Shine at Celtic Cup

The 2008 Celtic Cup Gymnastics Championships took place on Saturday 23rd
February in Lisburn, Co. Antrim. This annual event between the Celtic
Nations was this year hosted by Irish Gymnastics in Salto Gymnastics Club.
Douglas had 4 girls, and 4 boys on the Irish Teams - more than any Irish
Club, and the results were impressive.
In the girls competition, Sarah Buckley, aged 11 made her international
debut for the Irish Minor Team, and performed exceptionally well scoring
30.5 for the event. Douglas Girls made up half the U16 (junior) team, with
Niamh Rana, Alice Coleman, and Aimee O'Driscoll performing solid routines on
Vault, Assymetric Bars, Beam, and Floor. Aimee was best of the Irish Team,
scoring 42.5. Both the minor, and junior girls teams finished just outside
the medals in 4th place.
In the boys competition, half the Irish Teams were made up with Douglas
gymnasts. In the U13 age category. Adam Dalton, Daniel Fox, and Sean Tyers
took part, while in the older age group, Chris O'Connor, a Douglas gymnast
who also trains with Tolworth Gymnastics Club in London took part. Both the
minor, and junor boys took the bronze team medals. In the individual
category, Chris was best of the Irish Team for the Junior level, and was
unfortunate to just miss out on an individual medal finishingin 4th place
overall.
The boys minor team did fantastically, with Sean Tyers making his
international debut, aged just 10. Adam Dalton got the highest score of the
minor competition, scoring 13.2 for his Floor Exercise routine, but the
highlight of the entire competition was Daniel Fox making history by
claiming Irelands first individual medal in the Celtic Cup. Daniel had a
superb competition, getting the silver medal in all-around competition.
Douglas Gymnastics Club is going from strength to strength. The club,
founded in 1978 is celebrating it's 30th anniversary this year. The next few
months are busy too! On 1st March, Daniel Fox travels to the UK to compete
